Standards & Guidelines

The Medical Center's Home Page is designed to serve the informational and educational endeavors of the Medical Center community. It is publicly-accessible information and content should support the mission of the Medical Center. Personal and non-official home pages will not be incorporated as part of the Medical Center home page. A link to personal and non-official home pages housed on other computers will be provided as appropriate.

The authors of all pages linked to the Medical Center's home page are responsible for the content of their own pages. These pages must:

  1. Comply with copyright and trademark requirements. (Be sure to have permission to publish the information, graphics, letters, or photographs on your pages if you are not the author or creator. Photographs of an individual or personal information about an individual must not be included without the permission of the individual.)
  2. Comply with local, state, and federal laws.
  3. Comply with University policies, including the Network Publishing Guidelines, the University Code of Conduct for Users of Computing Systems, and the GW Graphic Standards Manual.
  4. Ensure that the page follows high editorial standards and that the information is factually accurate and current.
  5. Include The George Washington University wordmark or the The George Washington University Medical Center wordmark (wordmarks are available from the GW Graphic Standards Manual).
  6. Include a link to the home page of The George Washington University (http://www.gwu.edu/) on your site's home page.
  7. Include a link to the home page of The George Washington University Medical Center (http://www.gwumc.edu/) on your site's home page.
  8. Include the full name of the unit that is publishing the page.
  9. Provide the e-mail address of the person responsible for the upkeep of the page.
  10. Provide the date of last update on your site's home page. You may change the date of your last update to reflect the fact that you have fully reviewed your home page but made no major alterations.
  11. Include a link on all pages back to the unit's home page.
  12. Clearly indicate which areas/links on the home page are restricted, i.e. require passwords for access.
  13. Contain a link to the University's EEO/AA statement on all pages announcing the recruitment of faculty, staff, or students, or which offer a service to the public on behalf of the University. Use the following link and link text:

  14. Meet or exceed Section 508 and/or the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) Guidelines. While the GWUMC website is not currently subject to Section 508 laws, as a Health and Medical Education institution, we should be leading the way in accessibility and ADA compliance.
