Novell-delivered Applications:
Connecting to MedLine, Online Catalogs,
and other Electronic Programs from your PC
Question:
A.L. asks -- how can I connect to MedLine and other online catalogs from my PC?
Answer:
The Himmelfarb Library offers many health-related
resources accessible through your PC desktop. These resources
are grouped together in a desktop window called Novell-delivered
Applications. If the Novell-delivered Applications window
does not appear on your desktop after logging onto the Enterprise
Network, click once on the Novell-delivered Applications button
located on the taskbar (in the bottom left corner of your monitor).
To access a resource, click on the icon.
Descriptions of each program are as follows:
- GWIS2 - George Washington
Information System provides access to your GWIS2 email account
and other GW University services.
- (HAL) Library Catalog - access
to the Himmelfarb Library's catalog for: book, audiovisual and
journal holdings information, user account information, clinical
alerts from NIH, Library news, classes, Library hours, new book
titles, electronic requests for ILL, photocopy, reference, and
other Library services.
- MEDLINE and Other Databases - search
the biomedical database MEDLINE back to 1966 for journal citations.
Other databases include BioethicsLine, Cancerlit, CINAHL (Cumulative
Index to Nursing and Allied Health), HealthSTAR, NIOSHTIC (Occupational
Safety and Health), and Popline.
- PDQ (Cancer Information) - full-text
cancer information from the National Cancer Institute. Includes
cancer treatment, screening, supportive care, clinical trials,
and physician/organization directories.
- NLM Locator - access
to the National Library of Medicine's online catalog for book,
journal, and audiovisual holdings.
- ALADIN - access to
the Gelman Library's online catalog and other databases, such
as PsycInfo.
- Jacob Law Library - access
to the holdings of GW's law library.
- Rapid FTP (file transfer protocol) - this
program provides quick transfer of files from your desktop or
GWIS2 account to other PC drives and computers.
- Telnet - provides
remote log-in to other Internet, University, or research accounts.
- IDX - MFA administration
functions. For assistance, please call the IDX Help Desk at (703)

- SAS - Statistical
Analysis Software for data management and analysis. For account
and technical assistance, please call Donald Lockley at 994-8746.
- SAS Windows - Windows
version of SAS.
- BANNER (UNIX2) - Human
Resources time reporting system. For account and technical assistance,
please call LaMont Benson at 994-8739.
- BANNER (UNIX5) - Time
reporting system plus access to Pine e-mail, SAS, utilities, and
other special applications.
