Paul Matera has served as a local, regional and state level EMS Physician Medical Director for numerous Academic, EMS, Fire/EMS and Police based agencies. A sworn firefighter since 1975 and a certified EMT and Paramedic, Matera became a Fire-Rescue Training Officer and then Commanding Officer – Rescue Squad. Following medical school and residency, he began Emergency Medicine/Critical Care Medicine practice and served as Vice Chair of Emergency Medicine and Interim Director of Critical Care Medicine at Providence Hospital in Washington, DC.
Matera is certified in Emergency Medicine, Clinical Electrocardiography and is an EMT-P instructor. He is an Associate Clinical Professor at George Washington University and has been awarded the Medal of Valor by the American Medical Association and a Career Achievement Award by the American College of Emergency Physicians. In addition, he is the Founder/Chair of the Street Medicine Society and sits on the editorial boards of JEMS and NAEMSP/PEC.
